Through your generous donations, more than 200 PreK - 5th grade students were able to participate in this program about diversity and inclusion for free. Thank you!!!If Saturday's "Don't Judge a Book by Its Cover" culminating event is any indication, our future is in good hands. More than 200 PreK thru 5th grade students participated in the project which involved reading and discussing curated books related to diversity and inclusion. 75 students then submitted a self-created book that showcased a personal or fictional story related to inclusion. Quotations from the students' books along with illustrations were posted all along Gail Allison Drive for the participants to view in a walk around campus on Saturday. Two student winners, kindergartner Jeevan Iyer and 4th grader Zofia Simpson have their entire books featured at the Orange Branch Library in a "Story Walk" throughout the month of May.

The Don't Judge a Book by Its Cover Family Reading Project was a joint collaboration between OCER and the Orange Branch Library, funded by the Orange Schools Foundation. The event was coordinated by OCER's Kelly Borders who partnered with Gary DiBianca at OHS to develop discussion questions for families. This photo album offers just a sampling of the dozens of stories the students created. The posters will remain up throughout the campus until the last week of May.

"The hard work and dedication demonstrated by all of the children and participating families was a bright spot in the pandemic and hopefully the beginning of many more steps this community can take to show kindness and appreciation to others," said Borders.

Congratulations to all on a spectacular project! #OrangeMosaic #TeamOrange #CelebratingDiversity
